NASSA hosts 3rd International Farmers' Conference in Bohol
“We lead the way,” says Marbel Bishop and NASSA National Director Dinualdo Gutierrez about NASSA-Caritas' Philippines ' involvement in the upcoming International Farmers' Conference on 18-23 October, at the Flushing Meadows Resort in Tagbilaran City .
The Farmers' Conference is the third international farmers' gathering sponsored by the Asia Partnership for Human Development (APHD), aimed at mainstreaming sustainable agriculture among the small-scale farmers.
NASSA Executive Secretary and Convenor of APHD's Pan Asia Sustainable Agriculture and Farmers' Rights (SAFaR) Program, Sr. Rosanne Mallillin, spc, explained the significance of the Farmers' Conference.
“The success of sustainable agriculture rests on the openness of the farmers themselves to the technology. During farmers' conferences, the participants are given chance to exchange knowledge and ideas and resources on sustainable agriculture and farmers' rights,” explains Sr. Mallillin.
Considered as one of the agencies with the most advanced sustainable agriculture practices in the SAFaR Program, NASSA succeeds Nepal in hosting the 3 rd Farmers' Conference for 2007.
NASSA leads 12 other Asian countries in the six-day Conference.
Participants will discuss sustainable agriculture technology such as Effective Microorganism Nature Farming, System Rice Intensification, Alternative Pest Management, and Organic Farming - all designed to boost production.
A two-day field exposure and immersion with farming communities in Talibon, Bohol has also been arranged to impart and highlight the province's best sustainable agriculture practices.
